"...conversations at the intersection of business, art, technology, and a great life..."

The One Thing
– Gary Keller and Jay Papasan

“Work is a rubber ball. If you drop it, it will bounce back. The other four balls– family, health, friends, integrity– are made of glass. If you drop one of these, it will be irrevocably scuffed, nicked, perhaps even shattered.”

Since its April, 2013 publication The ONE Thing has made more than 125 appearances on national bestseller lists, including #1 Wall Street Journal, New York Times, USA Today, Publisher’s Weekly, Entertainment Weekly, Los Angeles Times, Reuters, BookScan, and 800CEOREAD.

The ONE Thing was chosen one of the Top 5 Business Books of 2013 by Hudson’s Booksellers and one of Top 30 Business Books of 2013 by Executive Book Summaries.

People are using this simple, powerful concept to avoid overwhelming distractions in their personal and work lives so they can focus on what matters most. Companies are helping their employees be more productive with study groups, training, and coaching. Churches are conducting classes and recommending from the pulpit.

YOU WANT LESS.

You want fewer distractions and less on your plate. The daily barrage of e-mails, texts, tweets, messages, and meetings distract you and stress you out. The simultaneous demands of work and family are taking a toll. And what’s the cost? Second-rate work, missed deadlines, smaller paychecks, fewer promotions—and lots of stress.

AND YOU WANT MORE.

You want more productivity from your work. More income for a better lifestyle. You want more satisfaction from life, and more time for yourself, your family, and your friends.

NOW YOU CAN HAVE BOTH—LESS AND MORE.
In The ONE Thing, you’ll learn to

  • cut through the clutter
  • achieve better results in less time
  • build momentum toward your goal
  • dial down the stress
  • overcome that overwhelmed feeling
  • revive your energy
  • stay on track
  • master what matters to you

The ONE Thing delivers extraordinary results in every area of your life—work, personal, family, and spiritual.

“I don’t know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody.”

“The One Thing” explains the success habit to overcome the six lies that block our success, beat the seven thieves that steal time, and leverage the laws of purpose, priority, and productivity. [From: Goodreads.com]

The ONE Thing helps you to discover your most important goal, and gives you tools to ensure you can use your time productively to get there. The book reveals that many of the maxims we accept as good practice are actually myths that only hinder our progress. It also provides advice on how to live your life with priority, purpose and productivity without sending other aspects of life out of balance, because this is the way to perform the kind of focused work that leads to great success.

“To be financially wealthy you must have a purpose for your life. In other words, without purpose, you’ll never know when you have enough money, and you can never be financially wealthy.”

The One Thing: The Surprisingly Simple Truth Behind Extraordinary Results by Gary Keller and Jay Papasan is an excellent self help book which explains how to prioritize tasks when there are an avalanche of things to get done in the near term. The book shows how people quickly lose focus and accomplish little or nothing in an attempt to get too many things done on an immediate basis.

The authors advise people to stick to one thing or a few things until completion before taking on other tasks. This translates to narrowing focus. A corollary is that one thing at a time advances the world. In addition, do the most important thing first when everything seems to matter. A related concept is to choose to do the right things correctly.

The authors discuss the behavioral dimensions of getting things done too. Once a new behavior becomes a habit, less discipline is required to maintain the new way of doing things. Habits are important because these instilled behaviors help to determine our future success.

The book discusses analysis paralysis and the stultifying effect this has on getting anything done. In essence, the new rule is to get ahead by getting started. Mark Twain warns people of internalized biases in the popular phrase: “What you know for sure that just ain’t so.”

The One Thing is a wonderful book which addresses the dangers of analysis paralysis and the lack of focus in trying to wade through too many items on the agenda. The authors make it clear how to set priorities to begin getting the right things done the right way. This book will benefit management at virtually every level in an organization.

The presentation is enjoyable and very easy to read. In addition, this book could benefit people in addressing chronic behavioral issues ; such as, post traumatic stress disorder and even attention deficit disorder. The authors spend quite a bit of time teaching readers how to prioritize and focus their attention on one thing long enough to get it done correctly. In addition, the book teaches how to develop good habits for doing things right now or at all. [From: Seattlepi.com]

“Success is actually a short race—a sprint fueled by discipline just long enough for habit to kick in and take over.”
